PARTY PATROL MOBILE ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY
Interview with Kelly Farmer, Founder of Party Patrol
1. How long has Party Patrol been in business?
Party Patrol is still fairly young. We’ve been in business for just over 3 years now…we have been very fortunate to have some great success, so it seems like we’ve been around longer. It’s true that time flies when you’re having fun.
2. How did you get started as a DJ?
I started out DJing for the Brentwood Skate Center when I was just a teenager. I guess I caught the bug, I’ve been DJing ever since then. I love what I do.
3. What is your favorite thing about being a DJ?
My favorite thing about being a DJ is looking out on the dance floor after all the meetings and planning and seeing the bride’s friends and family singing as loud as they can to their favorite song or learning a new dance and knowing that I helped to create that special moment.
4. What is the craziest first dance you have ever seen?
This past August, I was DJing at Traveler’s Rest and a storm came through just after we had introduced the wedding party. All the electricity was knocked out and blew away their party tent. After the winds settled a bit, I rushed out to my van, fully equipped with a 3000 watt power inverter and ran an extension cord to get the music back up and running…the bride and groom danced their first dance by the light provided by my headlights to music powered by my van’s inverter. It was a night I’ll never forget.
5. Which songs always make people get up and dance?
Every year, Mobile Beat Magazine puts out a list of the top 200 party songs. They are pretty much on target every year. This year’s list includes “Don’t Stop Believing” – Journey, “Just Dance” – Lady Gaga, of course you also have interactive dance songs like “Cupid Shuffle” – Cupid. This is one of those tough questions to answer…you really have to be able to read a crowd to keep them on the dance floor.
6. What makes you stand out as a DJ?
I work really hard to pay attention to the small details. I constantly hear about DJs that mispronounce people’s names, or play songs that were on the client’s DO NOT PLAY list…those things can ruin a bride’s vision of her perfect day. We try to add special touches like personal photo montages and personal voice-overs during a special song. It’s not always easy, but the look on her face makes it worth the extra time invested. And we don’t send out 5 DJs in one evening like some companies…I take pride in knowing that all of our resources are focused on that special party for the evening. We never overbook like airlines and other DJs.
7. What was your favorite first dance, father daughter & mother son moment?
A few months ago, I received a call from a client who asked if we could move her wedding date up a few months. She explained to me that her father was diagnosed with a terminal cancer and they weren’t sure how quickly it would progress. I was happy move the date and went a step further by contacting her dad to record a special message to his daughter. He reflected on how proud he was of her and some special moments that they had shared together. I incorporated these recordings into their dance that evening…It was such a special moment. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place. I provided her a copy of the finished song. I’m sure she will cherish that gift for the rest of her life.
8. What is the coolest thing you have observed at a wedding reception?
I DJ’d for a wedding that took place on one of the bride’s friend’s farm. Instead of leaving to rice or bubbles, the couple rolled away under a sky lit up by a private fireworks display given to them as a wedding gift. What an amazing way to cap off and amazing celebration.
